Our History

Originally a Victorian steel baron’s mansion and more recently a University hall of residence, Halifax Hall is as one of the finest places to stay in Sheffield City Centre. Transformed into a 38 bedroom boutique hotel with five private function rooms, it provides the ideal conference suite, meeting location or wedding venue in Sheffield.

Foundations of Steel

Halifax Hall, originally known as Endcliffe House, was built in 1840 and owned by the family of Sheffield solicitor Henry Cadman. The house was extended in 1891 when it was purchased by Sir Joseph Jonas, a German born industrialist who migrated to Sheffield in 1867.

Jonas became a British citizen in 1876 and as a partner in one of the most successful steel firms in Sheffield, he built a powerful reputation in industry known worldwide. Also noted for his philanthropy, Jonas made a variety of contributions to local charities and institutions, including the then newly formed University of Sheffield who now own the building.

Sir Joseph Jonas reached the pinnacle of his civic life in 1904 when he was both knighted and achieved the post of Lord Mayor of Sheffield in the same year. At the turn of the century he was one of Sheffield’s leading figures and his legacy is still recognised by The University of Sheffield where his portrait now hangs in the institution’s Mappin Hall. He passed away in 1921.

A New Era – Boutique Hotel in Sheffield

The building was purchased by the University of Sheffield for a sum of £6000 from Sir Joseph’s trustees in 1929. In 1934 it became the University Hall for women and was renamed Halifax Hall in 1959 in recognition of Lord Halifax, who was at that point the serving Chancellor of the University. It provided a home to students for over 80 years.

In November 2008 the newly revamped Halifax Hall opened its doors to hotel guests for the first time in its history. Its mixture of contemporary and classic design, which integrates the period features of the former mansion, make this boutique hotel in Sheffield truly unique.
