The Town of Yarmouth, located in Southwestern Nova Scotia, is the financial, business, education, and lifestyle centre for 70, 000 people who live in the tri-counties of Yarmouth, Digby and Shelburne. They are now seeking to hire a Professional Engineer, experienced in municipal operations, as Director of Public Works.
Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, you will have responsibility for managing the Town’s public works operations including transportation infrastructure, water/wastewater treatment, water distribution/collection and transmission, solid waste management and storm drainage systems.
Managing a seasoned staff, you will ensure all aspects of these operations are run and maintained efficiently. You will also stay abreast of compliance issues, ensuring the Town’s environmental, safety and regulatory liability is well-managed. You will also participate in the preparation of capital and operating budgets, tenders, and contracts.
As the ideal candidate, you are a Professional Engineer with at least five years’ of municipal experience, gained either by working within a municipality or a consulting engineering firm.
You have a solid understanding of municipal operations including water systems, wastewater collection and treatment, roads, sidewalks, and other capital infrastructure.
In addition to your well-developed technical skills, you are strong leader with the ability to inspire other staff. Your planning and project management skills are exceptional enabling you to complete projects on time and within budget. Interpersonally, you are comfortable dealing with elected officials, the general public, employees, and the many other stakeholders who interface with senior level municipal employees.
