Winter storm to bring up to 20 cm of snow to Nova Scotia

Stock the pantry and warm up the snowblower — another winter storm is making its way to Nova Scotia today.

The storm will begin with 20 millimetres of rain forecast for the Atlantic coast, and then turn to snow on Friday afternoon.

An overnight winter parking ban in the Halifax Regional Municipality will be in place from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday to allow crews to properly clear streets, the city said.

A planned weekend closure of the Macdonald Bridge is cancelled as the weather will prevent crews from working. The bridge will remain open until 5 p.m. Sunday, but will then close until 5:30 a.m. Monday so a device that lifts and lowers deck segments can be moved.

Cape Breton Regional Police are advising residents to stay off the roads in the area until the storm subsides.

Chignecto-Central Regional School Board and Conseil scolaire acadien provincial in Halifax have cancelled classes. The Strait, South Shore and Annapolis Valley regional school boards announced they will dismiss school at noon.

Flights are on time this morning at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Air Canada, WestJet and Porter airlines have issued statements that flights to and from the airport may delayed or cancelled due to Friday's storm, along with travel rebooking instructions for passengers.

Marine Atlantic ferries between North Sydney and Port aux Basques scheduled to for 11:45 p.m. Friday have been rescheduled for 11:45 a.m. Saturday.

Low temperature: -4 C to -2 C

Northern Nova Scotia

Forecast: Heavy snow and windy.

Low temperature: -2 C

Southwestern Nova Scotia

Forecast: Rain, snow and then heavy snow

Low temperature: -2 C to 0 C
