CFB Halifax's secure network breached 5 more times, navy says

The navy's commander in Atlantic Canada says there have been five more breaches of a secure military computer network at Canadian Forces Base Halifax.

Rear Admiral John Newton says the breaches were found at the navy's training school at the base and aren't related to a larger breach of information found at HMCS Trinity, the military's East Coast intelligence centre, which was made public earlier this week.

Newton says the inappropriate use of information was committed by three instructors and two students at the school who transferred classified training material from the military's classified network to its unclassified network.

He says the navy's scan of its network found that a smaller number of files were involved than in the Trinity case, in which more than 1, 000 secret documents were mishandled.

Newton classifies the latest misuse as "small indiscretions, " but adds the navy views what happened as a serious matter.
