Weather in Nova Scotia Today

Weather warnings blanket Maritimes

Fernwood PEI snow roadFrom snow, to rain, to ice pellets and high winds, just about everywhere in the Maritime provinces is under some sort of weather warning today.

The storm, which began early on Tuesday has caused travel disruptions and power outages.

Most flights arriving and departing from JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport were cancelled Tuesday. There were also a few flights cancelled at Charlottetown Airport and Halifax Stanfield International Airport.

High winds knocked out power to thousands across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Northern New Brunswick in for snow

Northern New Brunswick was expecting the worst of the snow, with 15 to 25 centimetres forecast.

Central New Brunswick, including the Fredericton area, was under a winter storm warning with an extended period of freezing rain that was forecast to change to ice pellets and then heavy snow later in the afternoon.

"Light snow and ice pellets will become snow at times heavy this morning, " an Environment Canada statement said.

"The heavy snow will taper to periods of light snow this evening over northwestern New Brunswick but will persist throughout the night over northeastern New Brunswick."

Moncton was expected to get about 10 centimetres worth of ice pellets before changing back to snow this evening, while Saint John was under a heavy rainfall warning changing to snow later in the evening. Sussex was under a freezing rain warning.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible, " said Environment Canada.

People in that area of the province can expect 10 to 15 centimetres of ice pellets and snow.
